ABSTRACT

Introductions: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has become a major cause of morbidity and mortality in developed countries. The main difficulties lie in the fact that the studies of morbidity and mortality related to the diagnosed cases of COPD, in different stages, but do not take into account the early onset of the disease and therefore real incidence and prevalence are underestimating.
Objective: To characterize the population studied according to respiratory symptoms and risk factors related to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease using Saint George questionnaire.
Methods: This was an observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study in patients older than 40 years at Critobal Labra Clinic in La Lisa from October 2013 to April 2015. A survey addressing socio-demographic and medical interest and Saint George Questionnaire of specific quality of life of COPD were aplied.
Results: Out of all patients surveyed, 18.2% had chronic respiratory symptoms. Women (59.8%) and the age group between 60 and 70 years predominated. Allergy (48.8%) and smoking (45.1%) prevailed as risk factors and hypertension and psychoaffective disorders prevailed among the comorbidities.
Conclusions: The chronic respiratory symptoms found in our population, demand a greater recognition of the COPD. Therefore early detection and proper treatment raise the quality of life of these patients.
