ABSTRACT

Nocardia belongs to the genus of aerobic actinomycetes, is responsible for localized or systemic infections in animals and humans.
Material and Methods. Retrospective review of the records of 216 patients hospitalized at Infectious Diseases Department with diagnosis of nocardiosis, pulmonary and extra pulmonary tuberculosis or community acquired pneumonia.
Results. Clinical and bacteriological findings of 39 patients were included, 27 were male and 12 female. Clinical manifestations does not differ from an infectious disease of chronic evolution with affection of low respiratory tract like those caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
Discussion. In patients infected by Nocardia sp., differential diagnosis is very important since given their morphological and staining characteristics, they are very similar to that of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection, predominantly when it affects the respiratory tract.
