ABSTRACT

Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease (KFD) is also known as necrotizing histiocytic lymphadenitis; it is of low incidence, unknown etiology, and spontaneous relief. Symptoms are nonspecific; in a greater number of cases features such as localized painful lymphadenitis and fever are found. The first references to this entity were limited to the Asian population; however, in the mid-1980s, the KFD was reported in different parts of the world. Fewer than 20 cases have been reported to date in Mexico. The purpose of this article is to raise awareness of Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease and to report a clinical case. Results: We present the case of a male patient in the fourth decade of life, HIV positive, who had an increase in volume in the right lateral cervical region; he went to the Medical Center «Lic. Adolfo López Mateos» in Toluca de Lerdo, State of Mexico, where a excisional biopsy was taken in the cervical region. After histopathological evaluation, Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease was reported. It is necessary for any medical specialist to know, diagnose and provide the most appropriate treatment, because it is often easily confused with other malignant conditions.
