ABSTRACT

Since the beginning of the 20 the century the general practitioners physicians treated cardiac disease because there were not medical specialities. In the 30’s several physicians return to Mexico with studies outside of the country, improve the practice of medicine with new knowledgment and techniques in their private practice at the American Hospital and Cowdray Sanatory, because they had the few electrocardiographers available in Mexico. The Cardiology practice were very limited, however the cardiological patients number increased at the ABC Hospital at its new location in Observatorio avenue since 1964. When the Intensive Care Unit was founded in 1971, besides to have patients with several critical diseases, the coronary syndromes, cardiac arrhythmias, severe cardiopathies, acute pulmonary edema and cardiac failures were common in this unit. In 1984 the Echocardiography Department was created, and since then, the Cardiovascular Disease Division was developed progressively with resources, technology advances and the acquisition of hemodynamics and cardiac catheterization laboratory to implement cardiac surgery and current interventional procedures.
