Organ donation and procurement in Hospital General Regional No. 17 Cancun, Quintana Roo: one year experience

ABSTRACT
Introduction: The culture of procurement and donation of organs and tissues for transplant purposes is still a challenge for health professionals and procurator centers. The participation and knowledge of this culture and achieve the transculturation of the population is the challenge of health systems.
Objectives: Analyze the experience of a hospital unit for organs and tissues in the southeast of Mexico and determine the factors related to it during a year.
Material and methods: Descriptive study carried out in the HGR No. 17 concentration hospital of the state of Quintana Roo, with a population assigned to the state of 1,047,639 potential users of this hospital. The analysis of the total number of patients candidates for organ donation was carried out in 2017. The data were obtained from the «Family negative» card, which with prior consent is applied to the patient’s relative with a non-specified donation procedure. Relative frequencies were determined.
Results: During the period 17 potential donors were identified in the state, in 41.1% it was completed, with a total of 18 organs, of which 66% corresponded to corneas and the rest to kidneys. The factors related to the refusal of procurement in 30% the declared refusal of the patient to the family, 20% negative of the family and 20% indecision for decision making.
Conclusion: The procurement of organs is a culture that begins in the HGR No. 17 of Cancun, Quintana Roo. It is necessary to spread the benefits of organ and tissue donation and expand this culture among patients and health personnel.
