ABSTRACT
Introduction: In 2013, the FDA contraindicated the use of Hem-o-lock
® for vascular control of the renal artery during laparoscopic donor nephrectomy, due to reports of donor deaths associated with the dysfunction of this clipping method.
Material and methods: The present retrospective study evaluates the safety in the use of Hem-o-lock
® in a period of 13 years of use.
Results: A total of 105 hand assisted donor nephrectomies by laparoscopy were performed.
Conclusions: In the present series there was not a single case of dysfunction of these staples, associated with bleeding that required transfusion or death. Surgical strategies are proposed to avoid the dysfunction of this system, among them the application of transfixion sutures.
