ABSTRACT
Introduction: The first laparoscopic ventral hernia repair was described in 1993. Since then, the implementation and improvement of the techniques have been increasing. This is a bibliographic review of the evolution of ventral hernia repair by laparoscopic approach.
Material and methods: A search was made in PubMed of all the bibliography included between 2008 and 2018, in Spanish and English, using the search terms: Ventral hernia, history, epidemiology, etiology, pathophysiology, classification, diagnosis, complications, surgery, therapy, and laparoscopy. From those articles obtained: Review articles, systematic reviews, relevant randomized clinical trials and articles with descriptions of novel techniques were chosen. 31 bibliographic citations are analyzed.
Conclusion: The advent of the laparoscopic approach came to revolutionize the management of abdominal wall hernia pathology, reproducing the results of open surgery, with the advantage that it offers an improvement in short and medium term results in terms of complications related to the surgical wound, decreased hospital stay and a faster return to the patient’s labors. However, it is also important to consider its disadvantages, such as an increase in the risk of inadvertent visceral injuries, longer operative time, higher costs and a long learning curve.
