Clinical and Epidemiological Characteristics of Cutaneous Leiomyosarcoma at the Dermatological Institute of Jalisco Dr. José Barba Rubio, Mexico (1997-2017)

ABSTRACT

Background: cutaneous leiomyosarcoma is a rare malignant neoplasm that originates mainly from the piloerector muscle and in some cases has been found at the genital level in muscle dartos, vulvar region and mammary areola.
Objective: to evaluate the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of cutaneous leiomyosarcomas in the Dermatological Institute of Jalisco Dr. José Barba Rubio, Mexico.
Material and method: a retrospective study was carried out from January 1, 1997 to December 31, 2017, in which patients diagnosed with cutaneous leiomyosarcoma were included, where the variables of frequency, age, gender, location and association with pain were collected.
Results: 19 cases of cutaneous leiomyosarcoma were reported, 10 of them were men (52%) and nine women (48%). The age range ranged from 11 to 91 years with an average age of 55.10 years. He referred pain in six (31%). Tumors mainly affected upper extremities in 12 cases (63%).
Conclusions: cutaneous leiomyosarcomas are rare tumors, reason for which the present study allows to know the most important characteristics of the same.
