Juan Nicolas Davalos Betancourt and his influence on microbiologic research training

ABSTRACT

Introduction: At the end of the 19th century, Matanzas was the birthplace of Medicine great personalities, in coincidence with its economical and cultural development. Juan Nicolas Davalos Betancourt was born in Sabanilla del Encomendador. He studied Medicine in Havana and in Spain, and got training in France on aspects related to microbiology and its techniques. After returning to Cuba he consecrated his life to applying what he had learned in the laboratory and in research in general.
Objective: to review his life and work as one of the great figures of Medicine and Microbiology in Cuba and to make some observations on his influence on the training of doctors researchers in Microbiology.
Development: he was an outstanding Cuban bacteriologist. Data are given on his life and work as a precursor of Bacteriology in Cuba who dignified medical practice in the laboratory, and also on his contributions to microbiological and research training. It is recognized his influence in training researchers with outstanding elements in training disciples, his imprint on the researchers of his group, his time and the times after him in relation to team work, publicizing the research results in publishing and among the academic environment, and also as in carrying out research to order.
Conclusions: he consecrated himself to the microbiologic-scientific research toward the health problems of his times. His research went from the laboratory to practice, and from diagnose to therapy with clear elements of educative influence.
