ABSTRACT

In the present work, we intend to approach a topic that, not having been addressed on repeated occasions, is very clear in all the actors involved in the doctor-patient relationship. Historical references are made on the Evolution of the Concept, which goes from the primitive conceptions to the most modern accepted today. It shows that, despite lacking some normative clarifications on this issue, there are sufficient legal references to demand compliance. It also aims to contribute to the legal and ethical culture of our medical professionals in avoidance of possible complaints and claims. Evidence is presented through surveys that show certain shortcomings present today. Medical professionals must know that it is their obligation and responsibility to give their patients enough information about the purpose, methods, risks, inconveniences and possible failures of the procedures to be applied to diagnose or treat presumed or obvious illnesses. Finally, recommendations are made with the aim of contributing to the preparation of our professionals on this important topic.
