ABSTRACT

Objectives: To describe the characteristics of pediatric patients with congenital heart disease, at the “Dr. Rafael Lucio” located in Veracruz, Mexico. Material and methods: A cross-sectional and retrospective study with congenital heart disease patients, in whom the diagnosis was confirmed by Doppler echocardiography, evaluated from January 2014 to December 2016. Results: We included 608 patients, 311 (51.1%) were male. Newborns were the largest group (n = 251, 41.3%), and the majority were premature. Sixty-two patients (10.2%) had Down syndrome. Acyanogenic heart diseases were the most frequent (n = 566, 93.1%); of these, patent ductus arteriosus was the main one (n = 175), followed by the ventricular septal defect (n = 127) and atrial septal defect (n = 66). There were 42 patients with cyanogenic cardiopathies, of which tetralogy of Fallot was the most frequent (n = 10). Conclusions: In a Mexican regional hospital, the epidemiology of pediatric patients with congenital heart disease is similar to other hospitals of the same characteristics.
