ABSTRACT

Objective: To know if the leptina is associated with the overweight in children with diabetes mellitus.
Material and methods: It was design a case and control study in 30 children with diabetes mellitus: 15 cases with overweight-obesity and 15 controls with a normal BMI. The sample was paired by sex: 20 females and 10 males. In all of them a sample of blood was obtained in order to study the plasmatic concentration of leptin.
Results: In the girls (n = 20) the leptin concentration was 25.0 ± 11.0 ng/mL while in the children (n = 10) it was of 8.5 ± 5.9; the difference was significant with the t test (p ‹ 0.005), assuming that the variances were equal (p ‹ 0.023). Differences in leptin were also significant among the 10 women with diabetes, but without overweight-obesity and a normal BMI.
Conclusions: The leptin concentration was higher among the women and it was higher in those with overweight-obesity.
