ABSTRACT

Objective: To know the frequency of gastric bleeding in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
Material and methods: The clinical files of 82 neonates were revised. All of them were choice because the newborns had been bled by the orogastric feeding tube, among 282 neonates admitted during one year at NICU. Information was obtained about: gestation age, weight, days of extrauterin life, diagnostic at entrance, clinical conditions and treatment.
Results: There was an incidence rate of gastric bleeding of 28.8%. The frequency of bleeding was bigger in the first three days of life, in those with weight < 1,500 g, with sepsis or breathing difficulty, with a gestation age between 32 and 36 weeks. Half of the neonates received metilxanthins and 10% were treated with indometacine; 95% received mechanic ventilation.
Conclusions: The findings confirm that some of the factors which has been associated to the gastric bleeding in a neonates.
