ABSTRACT

The National Institute of Hygiene, Epidemiology and Microbiology (INHEM) was founded in 1902 as Laboratory of the Isle of Cuba, and later became the National Laboratory. In 1944 it was transformed into the National Hygiene Institute, and in 1966 new functions were added in the fields of epidemiology and microbiology. The paper describes the hygienic-sanitary conditions existing on the Isle of Cuba before and at the moment when the Laboratory of the Isle of Cuba was created, its evolution into the current INHEM, and the role the institution has played in the control of health problems during its years of specialized work. The study was based on the historical method, supported by the document analysis technique. A review was conducted of files, health statistics, papers published about the topic and interviews with experts. The INHEM was founded upon completion of the sanitation campaign fostered by health authorities during the occupation. At first, the institution was intended to support health care work, but it gradually became the current INHEM, a leading center for the control of epidemics and the improvement of hygiene in Cuba. In its 115 years of uninterrupted direct care of the population and hygienicepidemiological surveillance, the Institute has been engaged in research, advisory and human-resources training. It is a World Health Organization/ Pan American Health Organization (WHO/PAHO) Collaborating Center, and has become the leading institution in the sector.
