ABSTRACT

Objective: Determine the blood flow reference values for orbital arteries in a Cuban population.
Methods: A cross-sectional observational descriptive study was conducted of 630 normal orbits of 315 patients aged over 18 years with no history of arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, smoking, hematologic disease, or symptoms of known ophthalmologic conditions. All patients underwent intraocular tension measurement, orbital ultrasound and carotid Doppler scanning. Only when the results obtained were normal, Doppler ultrasonographic evaluation was performed of ophthalmic, central retinal and long posterior ciliary arteries.
Results: Mean age of the study subjects was 30.4 years. 51.7 % were male and 39.3 % had white skin color. A weak linear, positive, significant correlation was found between age and resistivity and pulsatility indices, whereas such correlation was negative at peak systolic and end diastolic velocities. With respect to age, velocity parameters did not show any relevant differences between men and women or between the different skin color groups.
Conclusions: Orbital artery blood flow reference values determined in a Cuban population, will make it possible to suspect when the hemodynamic features of an orbit are not normal.
