ABSTRACT

Glaucoma is one the three main causes of blindness both worldwide and in Cuba. Intraocular pressure is one of the many factors known to lead to the development of this condition.
Objectives: Determine the relationship between coffee intake and ocular pressure.
Method: Out of a universe of 157 patients, a sample of 110 were selected for a prospective longitudinal study. A full ophthalmological medical record was made for each patient, demographic data were collected, and intraocular pressure was measured before drinking coffee and 30 min, 60 min and 90 after intake of Arriero and Hola coffee.
Results: There was a predominance of women aged over 60 years. Glaucoma and ocular hypertension prevailed among the personal and family antecedents. Daily coffee intake and cigarette smoking were low in the study group. No clinically significant changes were found between the two types of coffee. Only Hola coffee showed statistically significant changes.
Conclusions: It seems that caffeine intake is not the only cause of an increase in intraocular pressure.
