Key words:

Internal carotid artery, Anatomic variation.

ABSTRACT

Background: The carotid arteries are the main way of supply with blood to the head and the neck and the deep knowledge of its anatomy is vital for all surgeons who operate in the neck area. There are anatomic variations in the presentation of the internal carotid artery with varied degrees of severity and really prone to operative accidents.
Objective: To describe the incidence of anatomic anomalies in the cervical internal carotid artery in a single institution.
Material and Method: A retrospective study of the operative reports was made. All the patients submitted to a neck dissection in Camilo Cienfuegos General Hospital, Cuba, from September 2017 to March 2019 were considered, searching for reports of anatomic variations of the internal carotid artery.
Results: A total of 72 operative reports were reviewed finding on them 94 neck dissections. There were found three reports of anatomic variations of the internal carotid artery, two of which had a mild curvature and the other median curvature. No reports of operative accidents were found and we couldn’t establish a causal relation for this alteration.
Conclusions: Presenting this experience we contribute to foment the awareness and the knowledge of this anomaly in the scientific community in order to prevent operative accidents.
