ABSTRACT

Objective: To identify ear malformations in patients undergoing cochlear implants.
Material and Method: A retrospective, descriptive and observational study of the types of cochlear congenital malformations found in cochlear implant placement surgeries, performed from August 2001 to August 2018.
Results: Of 111 implanted patients, 8 cases (7.2%) were found with congenital cochlea malformations. In two patients an horizontal semicircular canal surgical technique was performed. In the rest of the patients a cochleostomy extended to the round window was executed. Straight electrode stems were used in all patients. Extracochlear electrodes were observed more frequently in patients with cochlear hypoplasia. The auditory response and language acquisition was favorable after cochlear implantation in these patients.
Conclusions: The reported casuistry showed 8 patients operated with a diagnosis of cochlear malformation (7.2%) of a total of 111, a frequency lower than that reported in the literature.
