ABSTRACT

Introduction: Coronary heart disease is the number one cause of death in the western world, which is why it is a huge public health problem of global importance.
Purpose: To describe the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of diabetic and non-diabetic patients diagnosed with acute myocardial infarction with ST-segment elevation, assisted in intensive coronary care at the Institute of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery.
Method: A cross-sectional descriptive study was performed in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) admitted to intensive coronary therapy in the period from June 2016 to June 2017. 88 diabetic and 158 non-diabetic patients were studied, sociodemographic and clinical variables in both groups.
Results: In diabetic patients, risk factors such as arterial hypertension and dyslipidemias predominated. Overweight and obesity. The location of the AMI, diagnosed most frequently in these patients, was the previous one and the risk of complications was 2.73 times higher than in non-diabetics.
Conclusions: Elderly male patients predominated. Adverse events were more frequent in diabetics.
