ABSTRACT

Introduction: It is suspected that drug therapy commissions functioning in polyclinics located in municipality Boyeros, in Havana, is not adequate.
Objectives: To evaluate the composition and functioning of the drug therapy commissions and to identify factors that can affect their functioning.
Methods: Descriptive and cross-sectional study of 7 polyclinics. The variables were position and profession of the presidents and secretaries, permanent members, number of meeting reports, functions and management results. Data was taken from interview to the president of the drug therapy commission and from the meeting reports made in the year. A focus group was carried out with the participant of presidents and secretaries of the commissions, among other members; their approaches were grouped according frequency.
Results: The composition of commissions was not adequate in 71.5 %, all of the commission presidents were doctors, one of the commission secretary was a nurse, the participation of gynecobstetricians (42.9 %), pediatricians (71.4 %) and family doctors (28,5%) was low. The functioning of the commissions was rated as regular in 42.9 % and as bad in 57.1 %, just 42. 9 % had kept 9 to 12 meetings reports. It was also identified that health managers have little perception about importance of drug therapy commissions, lack of training of their members and the necessity that one professional assumes the activity as unique task in the institution.
Conclusions: It was identified deficient structure and functioning of the drug therapy commissions in municipality Boyeros, that was also recognized by members of commissions.
