ABSTRACT

Introduction: Unilateral congenital absence of an orthotopic kidney warrants a series of diagnostic exams in order to determine whether or not it is present in an ectopic situation as well as its distinctive features. An illustrative case of the use of image studies for this purpose is reported. Clinical Case: A white male with ultrasonographic diagnosis of horseshoe kidney at age 10, after a bout of mesogastric pain. The appearance of a further abdominal pain episode at age 14 led to image studies (ultrasonography, intravenous pyelography and computer tomography scanning), which revealed a right-to-left L-shaped kidney. Conclusions: The usefulness of image studies for the diagnosis of this congenital defect is highlighted. The name "J-shaped kidney" instead of "right-to-left L-shaped kidney" is proposed for this anomaly.
