ABSTRACT

Introduction: There are two different and contradictory descriptions about the so-called Valsalva maneuver, one of them with the mouth and nose closed and the glottis open, and the other with the glottis closed. Objective: To describe the effects of both maneuvers on the intra-abdominal pressure and the pelvic floor. Methods: A bibliographic review was carried out on physiological and historical studies based on the consultation of scientific articles indexed in Pubmed. Conclusions: It is evident that, of both maneuvers, only the first was unquestionably described by Valsalva, while the other is apocryphal. This maneuver with the closed glottis (used in Urology as part of the diagnostic tests of conditions such as renal ptosis, varicocele and pelvic floor dysfunction), has been called, with greater property and accuracy, "straining maneuver".
