ABSTRACT

Coccidioidomycosis (CM) is a deep mycosis caused by a biphasic fungus called Coccidioides that starts at the pulmonary level and can spread. In Mexico, the second most frequent systemic mycosis is CM; with greater prevalence in the northern area. The diagnosis requires a high index of suspicion, due to the nonspecific clinical and radiological manifestations. The CM can have diverse bronchopulmonary sequelae, as a consequence of the foci of primary pneumonia. The definitive diagnosis can’t be made based on a single characteristic, the combination of epidemiological, clinical and imaging findings allow the formulation of an adequate differential diagnosis. Isolation in cultures is the proven diagnosis method. We describe a case of pulmonary CM in an immunocompetent patient in a chronic clinical phase.
