ABSTRACT

Background: Cutaneous changes in pregnancy can be physiological, specific or worsening dermatological changes due to pregnancy. Objectives: To study dermatological changes during pregnancy observed in a second level hospital and in a clinical department of high risk pregnancy. Methodology: A descriptive, prospective, and transversal study of patients with any dermatological disease and at any gestational period or in immediate puerperal period of the patients observed at the obstetric external consultation or in the Hospital General “Dr. Manuel Gea González” from june 2005 to February 2006. Results: We observed 400 patients and only 36 (9%) presented a dermatological condition. The average age range was 24.4 years (ranged from 15 to 39 years). The patients were in the first pregnancy in 21 (58.3%); at the second in 6 (16.7%), at the third one in 7 (19.4%) and 2 patients were in the fourth (5.6%). Dermatological diseases were observed in the third trimester in 25 patients (69.4%), 7 were in the second (19.4%) and 3 (8.3%) in the first one, only one case was observed just after delivery. We observed acne in 6 cases (16.7%), polymorphic eruption of pregnancy or “papules and plaques urticariformes or pregnancy” contact dermatitis in 5 cases of each (13.9%). We also observed varicella, pruritus, xerosis and a wide range of dermatological diseases as viral mycotic and others. Conclusions: Dermatological diseases during pregnancy are observed mainly in the third trimester and can be related with this condition or can be worsened by pregnancy.
