Bacterial colonization in e-PTFE membranes in guided tissue regeneration

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to determine on which surface of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene membranes (ePTFE) exist more contamination. Nine ePTFE membranes used in guided tissue regeneration (GTR) on patients of the Clínica de Endoperiodontología UNAM FES Iztacala in the period of August 2003 to January 2004. After retrieval the membranes were dehydrated and included in paraplast and sectioned serialy at 5 mµ in a coronal-apical plane. Sections were stained with basic hematoxylin-eosin (H-E) and Gram and observed by light microscopy. Cells were analyzed semiquantitatively by its presence and types: mononuclear cells, erythrocyte, fibroblast, neutrophil, plasma cell, lymphocytes and macrophages in H-E stained sections. Oral bacteria were analyzed semiquantitatively by cell density (cell number/40 x 60 µm2) in the inner and outer surfaces in the apical portion in every membrane. In the present study all membranes showed the presence or inflammatory cells and bacteria at the moment of removal. The results demonstrate a significant difference between the among of gram positive and gram negative bacteria in the outer surface, as the presence of bacteria, inflammatory cells and fungi adhered to and invaded the membranes, which capable were to cross over the e-PTFE membranes, and reach the apical portion as much in the exposed membranes as in the non exposed membranes, and yet allow the growth of new connective tissue that can be transformed into bone.
