ABSTRACT

Introduction: the characteristics of occlusion during temporary dentition are considered precursors in permanent dentition, so the importance of a functional and stable occlusion as early as possible.
Objective: to evaluate neuro-occlusion rehabilitation in children between 4 and 5 years with occlusion interferences.
Methods: a quasi-experimental intervention was performed; based on the prospective and longitudinal evaluation of children from four Day Care Centers in Madruga municipality, Mayabeque province, from January 2015 to December 2016. From a universe of 100 children, a non-probabilistic sample of 36 children was selected according to inclusion criteria. Occlusion interferences were analyzed, according to their classification and masticatory function, which defined the evaluation of rehabilitation. Percentages, rates were calculated, Fisher and marginal homogeneity tests were used.
Results: the prevalence of occlusion interferences reached 36 %, with 47.2 % in laterality, a 63.9 % of bilateral involvement; the masticatory function of opening and closing prevailed with a 47.2 %. At the end of the treatment 88.9 % achieved the correction, with bilateral final masticatory function.
Conclusions: the prevalence of occlusion interferences in children was higher than expected, predominantly functional mandibular movements of laterality with bilateral predominance on the work side. After the neuro-occlusion rehabilitation, a balanced bilateral masticatory function is achieved in most of the children, with the proposed intervention which was effective in eliminating occlusion interferences and restoring normal masticatory function.
