ABSTRACT
Cervical pain is a pathology with different kinds of etiologies, one of them may come from the osteopathic dysfunctions of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) due to its intimate anatomical, fascial and neural relationship. Objective: To determine the functional and structural condition of the temporomandibular joint as a causal factor of cervical pain in the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the Santiago de Guayaquil Catholic University. Material and methods: It is a study of quantitative approach, descriptive-relational scope and non-experimental and transversal design. The sample consists of 40 teachers. Valuation instruments were used, such as physical examination, osteopathic assessment of the temporomandibular joint and the questionnaire application of the anamnesis of Heidrum Schäfer and modified Magga Corts. Results: It was found that 60% of the population had a cervical pain at the time of evaluation but 100% of it had structural TMJ dysfunction, the “right translation lesion” being the most recurrent with a prevalence of 70%. Muscle dysfunctions were present in 79% with the masseter muscle being the most prevalent with 40%. Conclusion: TMJ dysfunctions can be causes of cervical pain but not necessarily always present, they can be aggravating factors of pain. The dysfunctions can go unnoticed until the segment is evaluated and asymptomatic.REFERENCES
