ABSTRACT

Introduction: Ischemic diabetic foot and peripheral arterial disease are two conditions that cause pain and put in danger the functionality of lower limbs.
Objective: To demonstrate the effectiveness of regenerative therapy with platelet-rich plasma in patients with the above mentioned diseases.
Methods: Longitudinal, prospective and randomized study that was conducted in the Angiology Service of “Julio Trigo López” Hospital, from January 2016 to December 2017. There were 26 patients included in 2 groups: 10 non-diabetic patients with intermittent claudication and 16 patients with ischemic lesions in the diabetic foot. Platelet-rich plasma was used instramuscularly in an affected legs of the first group, and intraperilesional and perilesional in the diabetic foot.
Results: There was pain relief and improvement in more than 70 % of patients in the claudication distance higher or near to 200 meters. In the patients presenting ischemic diabetic foot, pain relief and closing of ischemic lesions in the 81,3 % , just 3 patients required major amputations of lower limbs.
Conclusions: Regenerative therapy results effective in the rescue of lower limbs in patients presenting peripheral arterial disease and ischemic diabetic foot. It also reduces major amputations of lower limbs and it is another therapeutic option in the hands of trained specialists due to its social impact and in the life quality of patients and their families.
