Case report of Wilkie syndrome: proposal of an opportune diagnosis

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The superior mesenteric artery syndrome (SAMS) represents a rare cause of intestinal obstruction due to external compression of the third duodenal portion by the superior mesenteric artery. Clinical case: A 17-year-old woman who presented immediate postprandial nausea, vomiting of gastro-alimentary contents and colic type pain in epigastric; BMI of 14.6 kg/m2; CT showed extrinsic duodenal compression in the third portion; diagnosing SAMS and introducing conservative treatment, taking a favorable course. Conclusions: The SAMS, despite its low incidence, should be considered as a differential diagnosis in cases of intestinal obstruction, reducing costs in its diagnostic approach.
