ABSTRACT

Introduction. In Mexico, most of the research on the body image perception has been focused to the urban population and there is a significant lack of information in the rural and / or native population.
Objective. To determine the presence of alterations in the perception of body image, body mass index and emotional state in indigenous adolescents from the community of Coatecas Altas, Oaxaca, Mexico.
Material and Methods. Weight and height determinations were made to calculate the Body Mass Index (BMI). In the body image perception, selfadministered surveys were applied. The emotional side was quantified according to the Rosenberg scale and the Goldberg scale. Finally, for the statistical analysis a binary logistic regression was performed to identify the corresponding associations.
Results. According to the BMI, the 12.2% of the study population had an underweight and 16.5% overweight, and 29.3% had a body image perception that does not correspond to reality. 84.7% presented low self-esteem, 23.8% anxiety and 5.5% depression, and the body image perception was associated significantly with BMI (p = 0.008).
Conclusions. It was identified that the indigenous adolescent population, as well as that of urban areas, associates the PIC with the BMI. However, was not find association between the PIC and the emotional part. It results important to do more research should be done to determine why in areas of very high marginalization this tendency was observe.
