Cartilaginous bone tumors in children. Epidemiological report from 20 years

ABSTRACT

Introduction. Cartilaginous Bone Tumors are among the most common in children. Its presentation depend on histologic type and stage of the tumor according to Enneking classification. Material and methods. A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out in 236 patients diagnosed and surgically treated for cartilaginous bone tumors at “Eduardo Agramonte Piña” Paediatric Hospital, from 1982 to 2002. Results. Masculine sex prevailed in 60.5% of patients. The age group with higher incidence was that of 11 to 15 years old with 147 for 62.2%. The type of tumors more frequently found was the Osteochondroma with 177 patients, representing the 75%. Symptomatology composed by pain and increase in volume was represented in the 79.6%, and 68.6% respectively. Metaphysial zones around the knee were the most affected with more than 40%. Active benign tumors according to Enneking, were the most common. Treatment most use was resection. Discussion. Our results are comparable in regards to bibliography about this topic.
