ABSTRACT

The job or profession of tattooing has been practiced since ancient times up to the present times, is an activity that has increased exponentially in our country. And, this practice has been a trade of knowledge transmitted from person to person.
Th is trade has become in an industry that gives rise to various fields of action such as economic, labor, health and medical regulation.
This growth is due to the demand of population to get a tattoo, the reasons may be diff erent motives or causes like social factors or personal interests such as: cultural stereotypes, sense of belonging to an ethnic group, identity and attachment to a group, motives of idiosyncrasy, religious symbolism, among others.
The application of tattoos could become a public health problem from the perspective that they are a vehicle for transmission of diseases due to an inadequate health care.
This article will provide a general outline of the historical background, the probable risks to health and the current situation of tattoos in Jalisco from a regulation health view, and the most frequent serious and non-serious anomalies during a visit of sanitary verifi cation to the establishments that practice this activity.
It is a fact that strategies and public policies on health should be implemented in the short, medium and long term, that contribute to the promotion and prevention of health risks for all the population.
