ABSTRACT

Introduction: Exposure to violence has significantly increased; and therefore, a high population index has been exposed to violence, directly or indirectly. In Mexico, the consequences of social violence on mental health have not been investigated. Aims: To analyze and compare the impact of perceived violence on two groups of people directly and indirectly exposed to social violence, as well as their attitudes, posture and psychopathological expression. Materials and methods: A sample of subjects from the metropolitan area of Guadalajara (indirectly exposed) and residents of the Rivera de Chapala (exposed directly) to social violence. The following instruments were used: Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, Davidson Trauma Scale, Scale of fear of victimization, risk and perceived severity, ACTIVA Questionnaire, and format of sociodemographic variables. Results: Those indirectly exposed suffered more common crimes in cities such as armed robbery and extortion by authorities. Those directly exposed had more abductions and murdered relatives. A higher level of symptoms of anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress were present in subjects indirectly exposed to violence. Conclusions: Those directly exposed to social violence have a higher perception of severity and distrust in the institutions, as well as a higher fear of being victimized. Those indirectly exposed present a higher level of anxiety, depression and posttraumatic stress.
