ABSTRACT

Introduction. The brachymetatarsia is a congenital disease, this pathology consist in shortening of one or more metatarsals bone, of the one or both feet. Material and methods. In this case, we have a female adolescent, treated at age 13 due to a congenital shortening of the third and fourth metatarsals of both feet. The surgical indication to correct the appearance of her feet because of esthetic motives was her decision, there were no functional limitations. The patience was treated in one surgical time, using only one incision on the affected side, two external mini fixators were place on both feet and a successful bone distraction in the four short metatarsals was carried out. Results. With an average growth of 22 mm per bone; concluding the elongation in the fifth week; the stretching devices are removed in the eighth week and the cosmetic and functional result has been successful with a five year continuation. Discussion. The brachymetatarsia is a pathology relative frequent, actually the major option of treatment is the elongation osseus progressive using external minifixators. This technique is meticulous and safe. There is no previous record neither in the national nor in the international literature about a case of double bilateral brachymetatarsia as mentioned above.
