ABSTRACT

Introduction. Lack of adherence to the therapeutic regimen is common in chronic diseases. In the case of arterial hypertension, the number of non-compliant patients reaches around 40% for pharmacological treatment and between 60-90% for hygienicdietary measures. Non-compliance makes the prescribed treatment ineffective, producing an increase in morbidity and mortality.
Materials and method. A cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate the adherence with antihypertensive drugs of a sample of patients from the health center of the village of Punuare in the department of Olancho, Honduras. Indirect methods were used such as the Morisky-Green-Levine questionnaire, the Martin- Bayarre-Grau questionnaire, the frequency of drug withdrawal and the measurement of blood pressure values. Kendall’s tau_b coefficient was determined to evaluate the degree of agreement between the different methods used. The variables included in the study were age, gender, type of therapy, pharmacological treatment and adherence.
Results. A predominance of female patients was found, with age ranges of 51-70 years, with predominance of controlled high blood pressure (39%). Enalapril was the most widely used drug (43% of patients). The percentage of adherent patients was 75% according to the Morisky-Green-Levine questionnaire and 41% according to the Martin-Bayerre-Grau questionnaire.
Conclusions. It is necessary to work to raise the levels of therapeutic and non-therapeutic adherence in order to achieve better control of the disease in the patients studied.
