ABSTRACT

Introduction. Work disability due to diabetes mellitus represents a public health work problem that must be addressed in the short term because it represents an economic burden due to illness and premature death.
Objective. To estimate the prevalence of chronic complications, the years of evolution and the cause of occupational disability in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2).
Materials and method. Descriptive study of patients with permanent disability in a medical unit of primary care. From a period of 10 years, data were obtained on the ability to lose for work, productive years of life lost due to illness, time of complication and nosological diagnosis. The information was captured in statistical software and the anonymity of the patient and the confidentiality of the data obtained were respected.
Results. The male sex prevailed with 80%, the average age at which the disability opinion was issued was 51 years. The most frequent nosological diagnosis was Diabetic Retinopathy, the percentage of loss of capacity for work was on average 59%, the years lost due to the disease represented an average of 13.5 and the years elapsed for the appearance of the complication of the DM was on average 10.46.
Conclusions. The relationship between the disease and the economic burden as a result of it is an indicator that currently represents a challenge for the health and labor sector. Although the cause is already known, it is important to make a timely approach and achieve an adherence to treatment to prolong the occurrence of chronic complications that cause work disability due to this disease.
