ABSTRACT
Ten thousand Athenians fought against 20,000 Persian invaders in the Marathon battle, in September of 490 B. C. According to the legend, after the Greeks triumph, an Athenian messenger, Philippides, was sent from Marathon to Athens, a distance of about 26 miles, 385 yards, and there he announced the Persian defeat before dying of exhaustion. Before this dramatic accident, it is simple to suppose that Philippides suffered of an unnoticed disease, for instance, a cardiopathy, which is a common cause of death in elite athletes. However, according the legend, there are many reasons to presume that Philippides was healthy and in good physical condition. Consequently, it is suitable to assume that the collapse and death was secondary to severe exhaustion, followed of severe physiological alterations. Such exhaustion was the result of incomplete recovery to an intense exercise performed a day after the Marathon battle.
