Tobacco use and periodontal disease

ABSTRACT

Introduction. Smoking is one of the environmental factors that more influence the possibility by the persons of suffering periodontal disease, for its development and also like and obstacle to a normal response to the treatment. Methods. A cross sectional study was conducted. The whole group was formed by 96 smoking patients older than 15 years old with the chronicle periodontal disease, that came to the consultation of the Dentistry School. An oral examination was performed on them after their prior consent to participate in the research. Variables such as the severity of the periodontal disease, age at first intake, physical dependence, initial and current psychosocial motivations, and the motivations to stop the consumption. Results. 53,1 % of respondents had gingivitis, age of onset was between 11 and 19 years (68,7 %), with a moderate physical dependence (51,0 %), the motivation to stop the consumption was low (65,6%),being the imitation (46,9 %) the main psychosocial motivation at the beginning of consumption , and the pleasure (42,7 %) the current motivation. Conclusions. Most of the patients had gingivitis, beginning the consumption during the adolescence. Smoking prevailed with a moderate physical dependence, and a low motivation to stop the consumption. It was the curiosity the main psychosocial motivationat the beginning of consumption and the pleasure, the current motivation.
