ABSTRACT
We present a case of
Cor triatriatum associated with aortic coarctation. In this case the fibromuscular membrane was obstructive and was associated with a restrictive foramen ovale. Clinical data was related to blood flow through the membrane to the left atrium. Initial echocardiographic assessment failed to detect the fibromuscular membrane but detected the coarctation of the aorta to which the clinical data of cardiac failure were attributed. Due to the presence of refractory cardiac failure a new assessment demonstrated the presence of the membrane with obstructed flow to the left atrium. Surgical treatment was decided for the patient consisting in coartectomy and membrane resection through a left atrial approach. There was good correlation between the surgical findings and echocardiography. The outcome was good with disappearance of the cardiac failure. The case illustrates the need of careful echocardiographic assessment when this uncommon cardiac malformation is suspected.
