ABSTRACT

Background: The sensitivity of prediction of acoustic reflex test and the visual reinforcement audiometry estimate auditory sensitivity and threshold.
Objective: To compare the results obtained by the visual reinforcement audiometry with those of the sensitivity of prediction of acoustic reflex in the determination of the hearing threshold.
Material and Method: A cross-sectional, comparative and descriptive study was done including children; all of them underwent visual reinforcement audiometry and sensitivity of prediction of acoustic reflex. Test of central tendency measures and error graphs to evaluate the trend of the data were made, the correlation between the tests was obtained and the confidence intervals were calculated with α = 0.05.
Results: We obtained a greater correlation in the left ear and an acceptable correlation in the right ear. The children with hearing loss needed more sound energy to obtain the aprenresponse and not in the case of the normal hearing in which the right ear was the one that needed the most stimulation when comparing the intervals in both cases; dispersions were greater in both ears for sensitivity of prediction of acoustic reflex compared to those obtained with the visual reinforcement audiometry.
Conclusions: The sensitivity of prediction of acoustic reflex test is a useful method for the profound hearing loss detection and should be an elective test for screening in centers where neurophysiological studies are not available.
