Congenital defects in Artemisa Province, in the period 2011-2015

ABSTRACT

Objective: to describe the total prevalence of congenital defects in Artemisa Province, in the period from 2011 to 2015.
Method: an observational, descriptive, retrospective, cross-sectional study was carried out. The data of the registry of congenital malformations of Artemisa province, belonging to the period from January 1st, 2011 to December 31st, 2015, were reviewed. Congenital defects were taken into account as those monitored by the Cuban Congenital Malformations Registries.
Results: the most frequent congenital defects were heart diseases with a prevalence of 46.3 per 10,000 live births (NV). Of the Neural Tube they were only diagnosed in 2.7 per 10 000 NV.
Conclusions: the total prevalence of congenital defects in the province was 240.62 per 10,000 NV. The mortality rate due to congenital defects remains constant. The interruption of pregnancy is the option that most couples choose after Genetic Counseling.
