ABSTRACT
Objective: To know the prevalence and the severity of the dental fluorosis in children living in a town at 2,000 m above the sea level.
Material and methods: 294 children from 6 to 11 years born and living in the community, were studied. The fluorine in the water available have a concentration of 0.67 ppm. In the evaluation of the fluorosis it was used the Dean’s index modified. The index of dental fluorosis (ICF) was calculated for the community.
Results: The percentage of dental fluorosis in the group studied was 70.1%. It was found 51.9% with a severe fluorosis; 51.9% had a very light; 24.8% a light; 12.6% moderated and 10.7% severe. The ICF for total population it was 1.28; but it was light (‹ 1.0) in children from 6 to 9 years age; in a half level (1.82) for those children from 10 and 11 years age there was a high ICF (2.14). When comparing the indexes found in ages 6 to 9 years with those of 10 and 11 years, the differences seen were significatives (p ‹ 0.0001).
Conclusions: In accord with the ICF it is possible to say that the fluorosis in that town is a public health problem. Comments are done in regard to the exposition to the sea level altitude and the temperature in that town as factors that possibly contribute to the dental fluorosis in the scholars.
