Teaching support material on reference values of clinical laboratory tests

ABSTRACT

Introduction: due to the diagnostic usefulness of complementary clinical laboratory tests, it is necessary to learn them from the pregraduate training in order to achieve better medical care.
Objective: to create a teaching support material on reference values of clinical laboratory tests.
Method: a development research was conducted at Dr. Leon Cuervo Rubio Clinical Surgical Teaching Hospital during 2018. The sample was comprised of 60 third-academic-year medical students and 15 professional specialists in clinical laboratory and internal medicine as assessors. Reference values for the results of the laboratory tests were collected. To the digital setting up, Microsoft Publisher 2016 was applied from the Office suite. Using Adobe Photoshop 10 to create the images; applying a semi-structured survey to evaluate the product.
Results: all the indicators had satisfactory or higher qualifications for the 95 % of students, where 26,67 % stated that the update was adequate. Respect to the perception by professors, all indicators had satisfactory of higher qualifications (93,33 %) of the teaching staff, 100 % of them qualified as satisfactory or higher the practical value and the coherent integration of contents.
Conclusions: this teaching support material was evaluated as useful, and covers the formative objectives of the General Basic Physician. The values are written in tables containing the test with its reference value (or range), specifying the units.
