An updated understanding of adherence to antiretroviral treatment

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Adherence to antiretroviral treatment is an important aspect to keep in mind for the maintenance of the health of the patient with HIV/AIDS. This category is approached by different authors, a reason why an evaluative analysis of its approaches is necessary from referents in the international and national contexts.
Objective: To systematize the term adherence to antiretroviral treatment, considering its relationship in current conditions with the health of a vulnerable population such as the patient with AIDS.
Methods: A systematic, bibliographic review was carried out to develop a reflexivecritical analysis of the content of documents, for which doctoral and master's degree thesis, original and review articles were considered. The key words used were adherencia [adherence], tratamiento [treatment], antirretrovirales [antiretroviral drugs], adherencia terapéutica [therapeutic adherence], identified through DECs or MeSH. The inclusion criteria for the selection of the articles were: articles in Spanish and in English available in the portals of selected data and that presented association with the topic, published between 1997 and 2015, and that clearly presented the methodology or selected theoretical reference.
Conclusions: The investigation on the adherence to the antiretroviral treatment allowed to operationally define this category. There are few authors that address it. However, the problems meaning a challenge to the health of the patient with HIV/AIDS in the Cuban context condition the need to promote the updating of knowledge in correspondence with the international situation.
