ABSTRACT

The new beta coronavirus is a spherical shaped single-stranded RNA virus that projects protein spicules in a pattern similar to the solar corona observed by electron microscopy. This virus was named new coronavirus 2019 (2019 nCOV) by the World Health Organization (WHO) and was later termed SARS CoV-2 by the International Committee on Virus Taxonomy. It has a high human-to-human transmission rate and a reported mortality of 6.94% worldwide. The disease caused by this virus is COVID-19, currently it is recognized that it affects the respiratory, digestive, neurological and cutaneous systems.
The published evidence of primary skin manifestations related to SARS CoV-2 infection until April 29, 2020 was reviewed in the PubMed database. Varicella-like eruption and pseudochilblain are the dermatoses most associated with coronavirus infection and they are referred to as specific skin markers of the disease. Other dermatoses that have been associated with COVID-19 but are not considered specific to the same virus are disseminated maculopapular exanthem, urticaria, and livedo reticularis, among others. Until the last days of April, we have not found records of Mexican patients with skin involvement, so knowing the literature published around the world is of vital importance to identify potential skin markers that are diagnosed early or that occur during the course of the disease to try to reduce the spread of the virus or to know its behavior in the Mexican territory.
