Eldery abuse: an increasing situation

ABSTRACT

Abuse in the elderly is a problem that occurs frequently, but has been increasing, given to elderly population increasing globally. There are different types of abuse: physical, sexual, financial, psychological, as well as negligence. Each of them manifests different symptoms and signs that should alert workers in the health area, since an early intervention can avoid many adverse outcomes. The typical prototype of an attacked older person is a woman over 80 with some type of dementia which is being taken care by a family member, since in most cases the aggressor belongs to the family nucleus. There are many approaches, however the main focus is to stabilize the patient and guarantee their safety. The sequelae in these patients are severe, including increased morbidity and mortality. The most important are preventive measures and early detection.
