Quality of life in the family informal primary caregiver of the children with deep cerebral palsy

ABSTRACT

Introduction: In most cases, family members or friends care for dependent people. They are called family informal primary caregivers. Cerebral palsy is one of the most frequent disabilities in children. When children suffers from deep cerebral palsy, they need custody because they suffers from severe motor limitations that make them unable to perform any useful physical activity.
Objectives: To identify the levels of health-related quality of life related to the family informal primary caregiver of the children with deep cerebral palsy.
Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out in the Pediatric Rehabilitation service at Julio Díaz Rehabilitation Hospital from April 2015 to April 2016. The sample consisted of 55 caregivers.
Results: A high level of impact on the quality of life related to the health of caregivers was found. There was emotional state effect on 47 patients and on the physical state of 41. Conclusions: The impact levels on quality of life related to the health of the informal primary caregiver were generally high, both physically and emotionally.
