ABSTRACT
Germ cell tumors are a condition found within differential diagnoses of anterior mediastinal masses. The symptomatology associated with these tumors is nonspecific but predominantly respiratory. Life-threatening complications include acute respiratory failure due to rupture of surrounding organs such as the lung (fistula), chest wall, and pericardium (tamponade). Because of these complications it is important to have a diagnostic suspicion especially in young women with related thoracic symptomatology. We present the case of a 41 year old female patient with respiratory symptomatology who in her study protocol is diagnosed as a tumor in the anterior and middle mediastinum, located towards the trunk of the pulmonary artery and left branch, bronchial arteries and left bronchus, left upper lobe to whom resection of the tumor is performed by medium sternotomy approach, with histopathological report of mature cystic teratoma with thymic tissue, mesenchymal cells, mature adipose tissue, intestinal epithelium, fragments of pancreas and mature cartilaginous tissue.
