ABSTRACT

SARS-CoV-2 infection also affects children, most of them acquire the virus by household contact. The COVID-19 disease in general has a benign course in children, with a higher proportion of mild symptoms than adults, nevertheless preliminary reports in Mexico show higher mortality rate in pediatric population than USA and Europe. This finding could be related to the high prevalence of overweight and obesity in Mexican children, and the chronic diseases driven by them such as diabetes and hypertension. The association between COVID-19 and multisystemic inflammatory syndrome was recently described in children with a severe presentation. The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has special effects in children with kidney chronic diseases, because they have higher risk of bad outcomes and also because of the impact on transplant activity, that in Mexico has been withheld since March 2020, increasing the waitlist time. Transplant recipients are at risk of bad outcomes with COVID-19, since they receive chronic immunosuppression.
