Functional analysis of medical team behavior in indigenous people of Mexico: the case of a rural medical institution

ABSTRACT

The effective service in the area of health implies that the various professionals emit behaviors that lead the patient to adjust their behavior to the established medical criteria. These behaviors are related to functions such as instruction, demonstration, exploration and regulation. In the case of attention to the indigenous population, the presence of these behaviors is more critical because the team uses medical systems that, historically, have been unknown to the patients. In order to identify if the medical team presents the necessary functions for an effective service in conditions of difference of medical systems, a non-experimental and descriptive investigation was carried out in the Mixtec town of Dos Ríos, Guerrero. The observation was 6 months, which 103 consultations were given by five professionals. It was identified that the psychological functions that enable an effective service are presented in little or no frequency, which is maintained between professionals and the language of the consultation. It is necessary to instigate the use of the functions for medical adjustment, incorporating strategies during the consultation to improve the health status of the indigenous population.
